Summary: A unique mature broadleaved woodland in the heart of Sherwood Forest. This woodland is bursting with mature timber and has many archaeological features.
Additional Information: King’s Wood is mainly large mature Sweet Chestnut high forest and coppice. Other tree species include Oak, Sycamore, Birch, Holly, and Field Maple. The Sweet Chestnut trees are an interesting mixture of large mature specimens, with many in excess of 150 years old, and some massive coppice stools that could date back more than 300 years. This woodland is full of historical and archaeological features relating to early settlements, ancient deer management systems and ancient woodland management systems. The current owners of this woodland have studied the history of the area and this woodland in particular, and can provide some well researched commentary on the local history. They would be very happy to meet the new owner of the woodland and pass on their knowledge. Please click on the link below for a brief history of the locality. Post-Roman history of Sherwood Forest is largely centred around the use of the area by William the Conqueror after his invasion in 1066. King’s Wood would have been a part of King William’s ‘Royal Hunting Forest’, and this explains many of the earthworkings found in the woodland. Very little timber has been felled in this woodland in recent years, and many parts of the woodland would benefit from careful re-coppicing of the Sweet Chestnut. This could produce significant volumes of timber, much of which could be of high quality and attractive to the local furniture trade. There is a Felling Licence approved for some of the tree felling. The understorey is mainly naturally regenerating Sweet Chestnut. The soils in this area are well drained sandy loams, fertile and well suited for growing broadleaved woodland. The ground vegetation is typical of the native flora to be found in ancient woodland on these soils and includes Bluebells, Wood Sorrel, Wood Anemone and Opposite–leaved Golden Saxifrage...
